..:: Monday Moxie ~ Unconventional Growth ::..

I ran across Bruce Mau's "Incomplete Manifesto for Growth" a while ago, but re-reading it was just as eye-opening as the first time. My top 5 faves are:

1. Allow events to change you.
You have to be willing to grow. Growth is different from something that happens to you. You produce it. You live it. The prerequisites for growth: the openness to experience events and the willingness to be changed by them.

4. Love your experiments (as you would an ugly child).
Joy is the engine of growth. Exploit the liberty in casting your work as beautiful experiments, iterations, attempts, trials, and errors. Take the long view and allow yourself the fun of failure every day.

8. Drift.
Allow yourself to wander aimlessly. Explore adjacencies. Lack judgment. Postpone criticism.

32. Listen carefully.
Every collaborator who enters our orbit brings with him or her a world more strange and complex than any we could ever hope to imagine. By listening to the details and the subtlety of their needs, desires, or ambitions, we fold their world onto our own. Neither party will ever be the same.

43. Power to the people.
Play can only happen when people feel they have control over their lives. We can't be free agents if we’re not free.

I highlighted points that I plan to embrace or focus on more. Take a few minutes to review the list. Does one resonate with you more than the others? What would you add to the list?

6 points of view:

  1. Right now, I'm really feeling Drift, and Ask Stupid Questions. The whole list resonated for me though. One more thing I'd add is to explore the things that irritate me or vex my spirit and figure out what's really going on there.

  2. Take the long view and allow yourself the fun of failure everyday! That's me #4 LOVE YOUR EXPERIMENTS AS YOU WOULD AN UGLY CHILD.

Joy is the engine of growth - (there's no lesson like a well learned lesson)

Loving you for this, as always!!!!!

  3. Hmmmm... "14. Don’t be cool.
Cool is conservative fear dressed in black. Free yourself from limits of this sort."

    Say what???

Damn! I thought my Coolness was a virtue! & most times I can be found wearing (something) black. LOL.

I guess the joke's on me. Apparently, I've got so much mo to learn! (smiles)

If I had to add something to this list it would be to: "Snatch JOY, and never allow others to snatch it away from you!" But when & if they do, SNATCH that ish back w/ a quickness! Because it's YOURS & no one's supposed to be bogarting it, dammit!

    One.

  4. Words to live by. When people stop growing, it's time to die.
