The Show Must Go On...No Matter What!

Twitter was lit up with some of the funniest comments I’ve heard in a long time. I admit it; I tweeted about some of the ridiculous displays of “talent” b.e.t. scraped up. After the “show” my heart was heavy, saddened by what’s touted as entertainment these day. These award shows pay homage to the denigration of standards many have paid a hefty price to obtain. More and more, anything goes, from cuss word-laced lyrics to provocative dances.

I stick to the belief that you do things well or not at all. No half-as*ed tributes, that were really intended to keep the sponsors happy by capturing the attention of b.e.t.’s largest demographic -- tweens, teens and young adults. Logically, The O’Jays will never be able to bring in the ratings Lil Wayne can, but don’t insult our intelligence by claiming to memorialize MJ and then have underage girls on stage gyrating to....

“I think you're bionic
And I don't think you're beautiful
I think you're beyond it
And I just wanna get behind it
and watch you”

Wow, that’s some deep stuff right there…and to think, these “lyrics” along with a bangin' beat make today’s music “moguls” millionaires. Mind you, these were the cleanest words in the song...

Every generation has been in awe of entertainers that make adults cringe. My dad brought me to tears over how ridiculous Prince looked wearing purple boots, but one thing he couldn’t deny is the man’s musical genius.

Just when we thought it couldn’t get any worse, BlaqVixen hipped us to a “twitition” going around to prevent Jay-Z from appearing at the VMAs because he may have been the reason Chris Brown didn't perform at the b.e.t. awards. The Jackson family supposedly requested Chris’ appearance. Yeah, ok, is that why Papa Jackson and Al Sharpton were there? I could be wrong, but I tend to think the Jacksons have more to be concerned about than whether Chris scoots across the stage. We can take time to petition such trivial mess and not anything of value. I’ll step out on a limb and say the majority of the undersigned can’t spell petition let alone know what one is. At last count there were nearly 800 signatures.

America’s got talent, huh? Anyone who tuned in to see an outpouring of love for MJ would've been better entertained by local news reports.

Debra Lee, girl, we gotta talk...

  1. Chris got black balled by some one maybe CoverGirl. But the truth is he hasnt faced the firing squad and gave up a proper apology yet. All he has done is kept his mouth shut and hoped things go away. Even R.Kelly faced the press. You cant be forgiven if your not asking to be forgiven. Till than his career is going to be on hold.

  2. I keep reading about how horrible the award show was. I don't watch any award shows so I missed the mess.

But, I think it's funny that I find myself liking the edited radio version of songs. When I hear the real songs with the curse words, I'm turned off.

  4. that performance with the 10 yr old girls dancing to lyrics that could hardly be aired turned me off (among other things). I just don't know. i really don't. it was more embarrassing to wake up and see it all over the news.

  6. Girl Debra Lee was on something to allow that show to go on. Granted they threw it togeher in 3-4 days but still, it could have been 20 times better. I only watched it for the foolishness. Overall I disappointed and quite frankly, embarassed.

  7. We complain about the show, but still watch it? I doubt the producers care if we love or hate it...as long as we watch and then talk about it. That's a boost to their ratings AND free advertising. The best we could do is simply ignore it. If no one is interested, that stuff won't be produced.

I really enjoy the blog...glad I found it.

  8. I couldn't agree more. I watched it...and it was straight comedy...for all the wrong reasons. I do believe that they used MJ's death to garner ratings. It WAS indeed impromptu and although I'd like to blame that on why it was half-assed...they could've done better. A video montage, an oral tribute by someone who knew him, and perhaps a few songs done by some folks that could SING...would've been better.

Truth is BET has been on a decline for a long time, and no amount of half-assed tributes, half-dressed women or half-witted rappers is gonna buoy them to the surface. Rob Johnson should've never sold it. He should've worked to get people on board who shared his original vision for the channel...to make it the place that we could respect, reflect, and build on. Awareness, positive images, all those things that were considered in its conception are lost.

  9. Well you know how I feel about the BET awards,
extreme embarrasment and disapointment. I feel sad for what passes as entertainment today..

I heard that Jay Z and Beyonce said that they would not perform if Chris Brown was allowed to perform...I didn't know if it was true or not!
